Levaquin is a powerful antibiotic, available by prescription only since 1996. The drug has been linked to an increased risk of ruptured tendons, tendonitis and a variety of other reactions including convulsions, tremors and hypoglycemic reactions in diabetics. Levaquin was typically marketed as an antibiotic of last resort for bacterial infections of the sinuses, skin, lungs (for pneumonia), ears, bones and joints. However, the manufacturer of the drug, Ortho-McNeil Janssen Pharmaceutical, aggressively marketed the drug as an antibiotic of first choice without adequate warning of the possible severe side effects.
The most common side effects of this drug are rupture of the Achilles tendon in the ankle, rotator cuff in the shoulder and tendons in the wrist, bicep, and hand. The risk of injury is greater in patients over the age of 60 or patients already taking a corticosteroid.
