Two prescription oral sodium phosphate (OSP) medications that many people take as a bowel prep before a colonoscopy have been linked to acute phosphate nephropathy, a type of acute kidney injury. The medications are called Visicol and OsmoPrep. The problem with these drugs has prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to order that the manufacturers include black box warnings on their labels about kidney risks. The FDA also said it had seen similar kidney problems in people who used over-the-counter OSP products as bowel preps, and recommended they not be used for this purpose.
You face an increased risk of developing acute phosphate nephropathy with the use of OSP bowel cleansing products if you are:
Patients with acute phosphate nephropathy can experience a decrease in kidney function. Symptoms can include malaise, lethargy, drowsiness, decreased amount of urine, and swelling of the ankles, feet and legs. There might not be any symptoms detected in the beginning stages. Symptoms may only be found by blood tests to determine kidney function (serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen).
You may qualify for compensation for kidney injuries that are linked to the use of prescription or over the counter OSP products taken before your colonoscopy.
