In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall of the Kugel Mesh Patch, which had been used by physicians during hernia repair surgery. The product was supposed to close the hernia and help the tissue heal. The Kugel Composix mesh patch contained a ''memory recoil ring'' which consisted of a small flexible plastic ring embedded in the patch, which was folded, inserted into the abdomen and then allowed to spring open, causing the hernia to heal and grow around the flattened patch.
Unfortunately, a large number of these rings broke subsequent to implantation and caused many severe and painful consequences, including bowel perforations, abdominal wall punctures or tears, adhesions, and intestinal fistulae. All of these complications involve significantly more medical treatment and additional surgery to correct the defect.
The manufacturer, Davol, had known about the defects of their patches for many years prior to the recall in 2007 but had attributed these problems to mistakes by doctors while implanting the devices. Subsequent testing, however, revealed that the problem emanated from a defective weld during the manufacturing process.
If you or a loved one has had the Kugel Mesh Patch implanted for hernia repair surgery and subsequently experienced complications, you should seek immediate medical attention. Complications may include:
