What is Fosamax and why is it prescribed?
Foxamax, manufactured by Merck & Co., is a brand name for alendronate, a drug that is prescribed to treat loss of bone density and other bone-related diseases. Fosamax is mainly prescribed for women who are post-menopausal and suffering from osteoporosis.
What is the defect linked to Fosamax?
Fosamax has been linked to two types of defects. First, Fosamax, like other bisphosphonates, may cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, commonly known as "dead jaw" or "jaw death." It is a severe form of bone damage in the jaw where the bone tissue does not heal after minor traumas. Patients taking Fosamax who undergo dental procedures are especially at risk for osteonecrosis of the jaw. Most cases occur following dental procedures such as tooth extraction, and may be complicated by infection.
Second, Fosamax has been linked to non-traumatic fractures of the femur and other large bones. Often known as the "brittle bone syndrome," these fractures typically take place four, five or even after six years of use of Fosamax.
What are the adverse symptoms caused by Fosamax?
