What is Tysabri and why is it prescribed?
Tysabri is a drug used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis and moderate to severe forms of Crohn's disease in adults.
What is the defect linked to Tysabri?
Tysabri, marketed by Biogen Idec and Irish drugmaker Elan, was discontinued temporarily in 2005 after three patients participating in clinical trials developed a rare but potentially deadly brain infection known as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
The Food and Drug Administration warned that some patients taking Tysabri developed "clinically significant" signs of serious liver damage within a week of their first dose. Additionally, two new cases of PML in Tysabri patients were reported after the FDA warning.
What are the adverse symptoms caused by Tysabri?
Signs of allergic reaction to Tysabri include the following symptoms: hives; skin rash; dizziness; itching; nausea; fever; vomiting; chest pain; feeling flushed; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat; breathing difficulties; fainting or feeling light-headed.
