Zyprexa, developed by Eli Lilly, is an atypical anti-psychotic medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1996. Doctors prescribe Zyprexa to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
What is the defect linked to Zyprexa?
Use of Zyprexa is linked to serious side effects that can cause severe injury and in some cases lead to death. Zyprexa users may suffer weight gain and face body temperature regulation problems. Furthermore, Zyprexa is linked to uncontrollable movements in the face and extremities, drowsiness, gastrointestinal problems and allergic reactions. In 2002, researchers at Duke University found nearly three hundred cases of treatment emergent diabetes in patients taking Zyprexa. One-third of these patients suffered a serious complication of diabetes known as ketosis. Twenty-two people taking Zyprexa developed pancreatitis and 23 people died. In response, the FDA ordered stronger diabetes risk warnings on all product information for Zyprexa.
