Will Massachusetts Legalize Speed Cameras and Red Light Cameras in 2026?

Our Massachusetts Car Accident Lawyers Break Down What This Would Actually Mean For Drivers

In an effort to prevent car accidents and other serious motor vehicle collisions, some Massachusetts lawmakers believe the Bay State should change its laws to allow communities to install red-light and speed cameras.

“This is a real safety priority,” State Sen. William Brownsberger of Belmont said in a recent interview with WWLP 22 News about the proposed changes introduced by Brownsberger and other state politicians.

So, what would these new laws mean for drivers? And what exactly are the regulations for red-light and speed cameras in Massachusetts? Our car accident attorneys at the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone explain what you need to know.

Are there any red-light or speed cameras currently in Massachusetts?

No, there are currently no red light cameras or speed cameras in Massachusetts. And to clarify, a red light camera is a camera that automatically takes photos of drivers who run a red light or fail to obey other traffic laws at an intersection.

As for speed cameras, these devices automatically capture video of vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit. Many cities, towns, and other communities across the country use automated speed cameras to issue traffic citations or warnings to drivers who exceed the posted speed limit.

What are the proposed rules for speed cameras and red-light cameras in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts lawmakers have introduced two separate proposals that would allow communities across the state to install red-light or speed cameras. If approved, Massachusetts Bill S.2344 and Bill H.3754 would introduce the following changes:

  • Give cities and towns the option to install cameras that enforce speed limits and red light compliance, especially in school zones and at busy intersections.
  • Photos or videos would only capture an image of the vehicle’s license plate.
  • No photos or videos would be taken of drivers or passengers.
  • Fines issued to drivers who speed or run a red light would range from $25 to $150.
  • Proceeds from such traffic infractions would go to the Commonwealth Transportation Fund.

State Senate Bill S.2344 is currently working its way through various state Senate committees. State House Bill H.3754 is before the state Transportation Committee, which has until March 18, 2026, to report on the bill, according to WWLP 22 News.

Would red light camera footage be available as evidence after a car accident?

Yes, and this is another key part of the proposed state regulations. Car accident injury victims would have access to such footage in the event of a crash. Such evidence could clearly show that another driver ran a red light or was speeding at the time of the collision. This is extremely important since this evidence can often be powerful proof that the other driver was clearly acting recklessly or negligently.

How can camera footage be used as evidence in a car crash claim?

Many times, there’s a lot of debate about exactly what happened at the time of an accident. Some drivers often deny wrongdoing or even claim the other driver was at fault and caused the collision.

When there’s photographic evidence or camera footage of a crash, there’s little room for misunderstanding exactly what happened. So even if another driver claims they didn’t do anything wrong, video evidence can clearly show that the driver ran a red light, was speeding at the time of the collision, or was breaking other traffic laws.
