Distracted driving claims thousands of lives every year and over the last decade it has become a nationwide epidemic, especially among teen drivers.

The Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone has joined the fight to end distracted driving by highlighting the dangers and taking steps to spread awareness – and you can help.

We are proud to announce that we are holding an essay contest for college students and will award three winners a combined $3,000 in scholarships to help further their education in 2021. The essays will focus on how to prevent distracted driving and promote safe driving habits among young drivers.

Distracted driving – especially sending or reading a text – poses a threat not just to the driver, but to their passengers, people in other cars, and pedestrians. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), from 2012-2017 roughly 20,000 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, and teens ages 15-19 have the largest percentage of fatal crashes due to distracted driving.

These crashes are preventable, and together we can help bring distracted driving to an end.

Our firm is offering a total of $3,000 in annual scholarship prizes to pay for education-related expenses.

Any applicable federal, state and local taxes on the scholarship will be the sole responsibility of the recipients.

Distracted driving is doing anything that takes your focus away from your driving, such as sending or reading a text, talking on the phone, eating and drinking, talking to your passengers, adjusting the radio, fiddling with a GPS or looking out your window. Doing any of these activities while you’re driving puts you and everyone else on the road in danger.

Texting while driving is by far the deadliest form of distracted driving and continues to be a problem for motorists across the nation – especially teen drivers. While 1 out of every 10 fatal accidents involves a distracted driver, those who have the largest percentage of distracted drivers in fatal crashes are teens ages 15-19.

The Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone invites you to share your perspective on distracted driving by submitting an essay that answers the following question:

How can we prevent distracted driving and promote safe driving habits among young motorists?

Only one submission is allowed per student. The essay must be original; plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification.

Each submission must include:

  • Your essay as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx format)
  • A digital photo of yourself (in .jpg or .png format)
  • A copy of your school transcript or proof of enrollment
  • Your name, address and phone number
  • The name and address of your school
  • A short, two to three sentence bio describing you
  • A signed waiver form with your parent or guardian’s signature if you are under 18
