Application Deadline: 5.31.23

One of the most effective ways to prevent serious or fatal injury in the event of a car crash is to wear a seatbelt. We’ve known this for a long time, but some still choose to get in a car without putting on their seatbelts, and young people are most at risk.

The Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone has joined the fight to end distracted driving by highlighting the dangers and taking steps to spread awareness - and you can help.

We are proud to announce that we are holding an essay contest for college students and will award three winners a combined $3,000 in scholarships to help further their education in 2023. The essays will focus on how to improve seatbelt usage and promote road safety among young drivers.

Compared with other age groups, teens and young adults often have the lowest seat belt use rates. For example, results from the National Occupant Protection Use Survey (NOPUS) Controlled Intersection study from 2016–2019 indicate that seat belt use among teens and young adults (16–24 years of age) was approximately 87% each year, whereas seat belt use among adults (25 years of age or older) was about 90% or higher for each year during the same period.

We’re fighting against preventable injuries, and together, we can encourage safe choices on the road.

Our firm is offering a total of $3,000 in annual scholarship prizes to pay for education-related expenses.

Any applicable federal, state and local taxes on the scholarship will be the sole responsibility of the recipients.

Each winner will receive a check from The Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone.

All applicants hoping to be considered for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current or admitted student at an undergraduate institution or law school in the United States. Proof of enrollment will be required to receive the award.
  • Submit an essay between 500 and 1000 words for consideration.
  • Applicants must agree (or, if under 18, their parent or legal guardian must agree) that their entry belongs to The Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone and may be posted on our website along with the entrant's name, photo and educational institution.
  • Employees of the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone and their immediate family members are not eligible.

Seatbelt usage is critical to prevent serious injuries in car accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Seatbelts reduce the risk of death by 45% and serious injury by 50% among drivers and front-seat passengers.
  • People not wearing a seatbelt are 30 times more likely to be ejected from a vehicle during a crash.

In 2017 alone, seatbelts saved an estimated 14,955 lives – and could have saved 2,549 more if everyone wore them, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While most drivers and passengers wear their seatbelts, some still choose not to, and teens and young adults are the most likely to make that choice.

The Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone invites you to share your perspective on seatbelt usage by submitting an essay that answers the following question:

How can we promote seatbelt usage and encourage safe choices among teens and young adults?

Only one submission is allowed per student. The essay must be original; plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification.

Each submission must include:

  • Your essay as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx format)
  • A digital photo of yourself (1MB max file size, .jpg or .png format only)
  • A copy of your school transcript or proof of enrollment
  • Your name, address and phone number
  • The name and address of your school
  • A short, two to three sentence bio describing you
  • A signed waiver form with your parent or guardian's signature if you are under 18
