How much does it cost to hire an attorney to handle my personal injury case?

Contingency fee

Did you sustain an injury because of someone else's negligent or reckless actions? If so, you may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim. One concern our clients often have involves the cost of hiring an attorney and whether or not they can afford it.

You may have sustained:

  • Broken bones
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Back, neck, and spinal injuries
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Internal injuries
  • Crushed limbs
  • And other serious injuries linked to negligence

The idea that you need a lot of money to hire a personal injury lawyer is merely a myth. The truth is that anyone with a legitimate personal injury claim can afford to get the legal representation they deserve. Here's how.

Our law firm operates on a contingency fee basis

If you were to handle your own case, the cost of launching an investigation, obtaining important documents, and eventually litigating the matter would come out of your own pocket regardless of whether you won or not. Fortunately, the Connecticut attorneys at The Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone & Morelli operate on a contingency fee basis. This means that you don't pay any upfront fees for your legal consultation or our legal services.

Instead, we take a certain percentage of your financial award after your case is resolved. You only pay if we win your case. Under Connecticut law Sec. 52-251c of Chapter 901, there is a cap on how much money is awarded to your attorney based on how much you're compensated. For example, if your total recovery is $100,000, your attorney can receive up to 33.33%.

The amount of money that your attorney charges is set by law and is based on a sliding scale which reduces the attorney's fees as the value of the case increases. For example, the attorney's fees are effectively reduced to 25% for a $1 million settlement or award.

When pursuing a case, it's important to remember that not all expenses are included in our contingency fee agreement. Any fees for court costs, investigation fees, medical records, etc. are paid by the law firm and then reimbursed out of the settlement or award.

Do I have to pay for my legal consultation?

Some law firms charge an hourly fee just for a legal consultation. Our law firm offers free and confidential case evaluations for our current and prospective clients. That means you will never have to pay a cent for your consultation.

During your case evaluation, we'll take the time to review the details surrounding your injury and help you weigh your legal options. One of our attorneys can also explain what you can expect from your case.

Our law firm handles a wide range of personal injury cases, including:
