Crossing Springfield’s X Intersection Remains a Huge Risk for Pedestrians

Why so many people are getting hurt in the same exact spot

Springfield’s notorious “X” intersection has long been known as one of the most hazardous areas for drivers and pedestrians in Massachusetts.

While local and state officials recently broke ground on a long-awaited $27.5 million overhaul aimed at transforming the intersection, the unfortunate reality is that this project won’t be completed for another five years, WAMC news reports. That means people in the Forest Park neighborhood will continue to run the risk of a pedestrian accident every time they cross the street.

Springfield DPW Director Chris Cignoli tells WAMC that each day, the X sees up to 30,000 vehicles navigating a confusing network of converging roads, including Sumner Avenue, Dickinson Street, and Belmont Avenue. For pedestrians, the high volume of traffic combined with outdated infrastructure makes the intersection exceptionally dangerous. With nearby schools, churches, and businesses attracting heavy foot traffic, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Springfield City Councilor Victor Davila, whose ward includes the X, told WAMC: “Pedestrian danger is real – try crossing the street, try crossing some of the avenues – you’re taking your life into your own hands.”

No modern crosswalks, bike lanes

The intersection lacks modern crosswalks and bike lanes, and much of its infrastructure has been described as “antiquated.” Many pedestrians must contend with faded markings, long wait times at signals, or nonexistent crossing paths. This is especially troubling given the dense residential and commercial surroundings where walking is not only common but often necessary.

Unfortunately, the planned improvements, including new sidewalks, pedestrian plazas, and high-visibility crosswalks, won’t come soon enough for those navigating the area today. Even with construction underway, the most impactful upgrades for pedestrian safety won’t be in place until late 2026 or beyond.

Pedestrian accidents can be devastating

At the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone, we’ve seen the devastating consequences of pedestrian accidents. These collisions often result in serious or even fatal injuries, and when they occur in high-risk areas like Springfield’s X, the danger is compounded by the chaotic traffic patterns and limited protections for those on foot.

Pedestrians struck by vehicles may suffer:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Internal organ damage
  • Psychological trauma

When crosswalks fail to protect people or drivers ignore signals and signage, victims have the legal right to pursue compensation. However, filing a claim after a pedestrian accident can be complex, especially when liability involves city infrastructure or ongoing construction projects.

How a Springfield pedestrian injury attorney can help

The city’s plan to enhance pedestrian safety is a step in the right direction, but until the work is done, the X remains a danger zone. If you or a loved one has been injured while walking in or near this intersection, you don’t have to navigate the legal process alone.
