Report finds efforts to prevent children from vaping are failing

The FDA made a big splash in January 2020 when it announced measures designed to stem an epidemic of vaping among youths. In particular, the FDA instituted a ban on flavored e-cigarettes designed to appeal to teens.

Unfortunately, a nine-month investigation by the Hearst Television National Investigative Unit found government efforts are falling far short of their goals. No one seems interested in actually enforcing the law. This made it easy for reporters to purchase flavored e-cigarettes at locations throughout the United States.

Health safety advocates are alarmed because they believe e-cigarettes are specifically marketed to people younger than 18. They point to advertisements that include images of young people and the fact that manufacturers have produced flavors that appeal to youngsters, ranging from strawberry, pineapple and mango to grape, mint and cucumber.

An industry spokesman, in testimony to Congress, conceded "underage use rates remain unacceptably high." The industry accepts little responsibility, however, instead blaming leftover surplus of the now-banned flavors, e-cigarettes imported from other countries and counterfeit products.

The Dangers of Vaping

Vaping provides a quick fix because e-cigarettes contain either nicotine or THC, the mind-altering compound found in cannabis. School officials say vaping undermines education. Students can't focus on their lessons when experiencing these effects or a craving for nicotine or THC.

The seriousness of the problem is underscored by the data. Reports show that slightly more than one in four high school students - 27.5% - have tried vaping. Among all Americans, at least 68 deaths and 2,800 illnesses have been linked to what is known as "E-Cigarette or Vaping Product Use Associated Lung Injury." Other research shows teens who vape are up to seven times more likely to get COVID-19.
