Hampden County on Pace for Record Fatal Crashes

What's driving the surge in fatal accidents?

Summer traffic in Hampden County means the roads pose an increased risk of accidents for drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

According to recent data released by the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, 2025 is on track to exceed the number of deadly car accidents seen in recent years. WWLP reported recently on the concerning trend. Already this year, the District Attorney’s Motor Vehicle Homicide Unit has responded to 42 serious crash incidents, an average of 1.6 per week. Of those, 28 crashes have resulted in death.

The devastating impact of fatal car accidents

These numbers are not just troubling; they're heartbreaking. At the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone, our Massachusetts car accident lawyers understand how every crash represents a life lost, a family devastated, and a tragedy that, in most cases, could have been avoided.

In Massachusetts, motor vehicle homicide is defined as causing the death of another person while operating a motor vehicle negligently or recklessly. When fatal crashes occur, the Motor Vehicle Homicide Unit is deployed to assist police in investigating whether criminal charges are appropriate.

While some of these incidents result in criminal prosecutions, the vast majority stem from poor decisions, distractions, or preventable behaviors. These are choices that turn a routine trip into a life-altering event.

What are the risks of accidents during summer?

Warm weather typically means more people are out walking, biking, or driving, and with that comes an increase in potential hazards. If the current pace continues, Hampden County may exceed the following recent annual totals for serious crashes:

  • 2024: 68 (lower due to unusual weather)
  • 2023: 82
  • 2022: 83
  • 2021: 79
  • 2020: 58 (impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns)

The troubling reality is that these crashes are trending upward again. And as Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni said in the WWLP report, “These numbers are not just statistics, they represent people and families whose lives have been forever changed.”

What are the top causes of deadly crashes?

The rise in serious motor vehicle crashes is linked to risky driver behaviors, which include but are not limited to the following:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Texting or using a phone while driving
  • Speeding or ignoring traffic signals

Every one of these actions is preventable. And every time a driver takes a shortcut or ignores the rules of the road, they increase the risk for everyone.

Tips to prevent accidents

Road safety starts with personal responsibility. A few seconds of distraction or a reckless choice can have permanent consequences. As DA Gulluni said, “One person’s moment of inattention can become another person’s tragedy.”

At the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone, we’ve seen firsthand the devastation that follows a serious crash. We urge everyone in Hampden County and beyond to:

  • Stay alert and drive sober
  • Put down the phone
  • Obey traffic signals and speed limits
  • Watch for pedestrians and cyclists
